Common questions
How much can I put in my 401(k) in 2026?
Up to $24,500 of your own money. From age 50 you can add $8,000 more, and at ages 60 to 63 the extra is $11,250. Employer contributions do not count toward your limit.
How does an employer match work?
A typical match is 50 cents per dollar you contribute, up to 6% of your salary. Contributing at least enough to get the full match is usually the best first step, because it is an instant return.
Why is the balance in today’s dollars lower?
Prices rise over time, so a dollar in 35 years buys less than it does now. The today’s-dollars figure divides by inflation so you can compare it with what things cost today.
