Measure the vertical rise over a 12-inch horizontal run. A 6:12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. You can measure from the attic or use a level on the roof.

Steeper pitches (8:12+) shed snow and rain better in cold climates. Lower pitches (2:12–4:12) are common in arid regions. Most residential roofs are between 4:12 and 9:12.
