Date Difference Calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator computes the number of calendar days between two dates. You pick a start date and end date; the result is the difference in days (typically the count of full 24-hour periods between the two dates, or inclusive count depending on implementation).

It is useful for project timelines, age in days, contract periods, and any calendar span. Teachers, project managers, and anyone planning by dates use it to get a quick day count. It does not exclude weekends or holidays; for business days use the Work Days calculator.

How to use it

  1. Enter or pick the start date (e.g. birth date, project start).
  2. Enter or pick the end date (e.g. today, deadline).
  3. Read the number of days in the Result section. Implementation may be inclusive (both dates count) or exclusive (only full 24-hour periods between); check the result for your tool’s convention.

Use the same date format (e.g. calendar picker or YYYY-MM-DD) for both inputs.

Formulas used

  • Days = (end date − start date) in milliseconds, divided by (24 × 60 × 60 × 1000), then floored to a whole number.
This counts full 24-hour periods between the two dates in the time zone used by the calculator (often local or UTC).
  • The calculation does not account for DST (daylight saving time) or leap seconds; for most uses the effect is negligible. For legal or contractual deadlines, confirm how "days" are defined (calendar vs business, inclusive vs exclusive).

Interpretation & examples

  • If you need business days (excluding weekends), use the Work Days calculator instead.
  • Example 1: Jan 1, 2024 to Jan 31, 2024 → 30 days (or 31 if inclusive of both endpoints, depending on implementation).
  • Example 2: Today to 30 days from today → 30 days. Useful for "due in 30 days" or trial periods.
  • Example 3: Birth date to today → age in days. Divide by 365.25 for approximate age in years if needed.

History & background

Calendar arithmetic has been used for centuries. Modern implementations use standardized date–time representations (e.g. ISO 8601) and treat dates in a specified time zone for consistency. Day-count conventions vary by context (finance, law, computing); this tool uses a simple calendar-day difference.

Limitations & safety notes

  • The result is in whole days and may not reflect exact hours or time zones. For legal or contractual deadlines, confirm how "days" are defined (calendar vs business, inclusive vs exclusive).
  • For age in days or medical use, ensure the tool’s time zone and inclusive/exclusive rule match your need. When in doubt, confirm with a professional or the other party.

Common questions

Are the days inclusive or exclusive?

Most implementations count full 24-hour periods between the two dates (exclusive of one endpoint). For "30 days from today," count 30 days forward from today. Check the result to confirm your tool's convention.

What about business days?

This calculator counts calendar days only. For weekdays only (Mon–Fri), use the Work Days calculator. It does not exclude holidays.
