eBay Fee Calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the total fees eBay charges on a sale and your net proceeds after all costs are deducted. It accounts for insertion fees, final value fees, payment processing, and promoted listing fees so you can set competitive prices while maintaining healthy margins.

eBay remains one of the largest online marketplaces, connecting millions of buyers and sellers across every product category—from electronics and collectibles to clothing and auto parts. The fee structure has evolved significantly over the years, and understanding the current model is essential for profitable selling. Fees vary by category, seller status (managed payments), and whether you use optional promotional tools.

Whether you are a casual seller clearing out a closet or a high-volume business, this calculator helps you understand exactly how much eBay takes from each sale.

How to use it

  1. Enter the sale price of the item (e.g. $75.00).
  2. Enter the shipping amount the buyer pays (or $0 for free shipping).
  3. Select the product category (fee percentages vary by category).
  4. Indicate whether you used Promoted Listings (optional ad rate, typically 2–15%).
  5. Review the fee breakdown and net proceeds.

Formulas used

  • Final value fee = (Sale price + Shipping) × Category rate Most categories: 13.25% of total (as of 2024–2025). Some categories like musical instruments or heavy equipment are lower (3–6%). Example: ($75 + $8) × 0.1325 = $11.00

  • Per-order fee = $0.30 per transaction (applied to managed payments orders)

  • Promoted Listings fee (if used) = Sale price × Ad rate % Example: $75 × 5% = $3.75

  • Total fees = Final value fee + Per-order fee + Promoted Listings fee

  • Net proceeds = Sale price + Shipping − Total fees − Your shipping cost

Examples

Example 1 — Standard electronics sale: Price = $120.00, buyer pays $10 shipping. Category rate = 13.25%. Final value fee = $130 × 0.1325 = $17.23. Per-order = $0.30. Total fees = $17.53. Net = $112.47 (before your shipping cost).

Example 2 — Clothing with free shipping: Price = $45.00, free shipping (cost to ship = $6.50). Category rate = 13.25%. Final value fee = $45 × 0.1325 = $5.96. Per-order = $0.30. Total fees = $6.26. Net after fees and shipping = $32.24.

Example 3 — Promoted listing sale: Price = $200.00, shipping = $0. Category rate = 13.25%. Promoted at 8%. Final value = $26.50. Per-order = $0.30. Promoted fee = $16.00. Total fees = $42.80. Net = $157.20. Effective fee rate ≈ 21.4%.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Free listings have limits. Most sellers get 250 free insertion fee listings per month. Beyond that, each listing costs $0.35. Insertion fees are non-refundable if the item does not sell.
  • Final value fees apply to shipping too. Unlike some platforms, eBay calculates its percentage on the total amount the buyer pays, including shipping. Free shipping eliminates buyer-facing shipping but does not reduce the final value fee basis.
  • Category matters. Fee rates range from 3% (heavy equipment) to 15% (some categories). Check eBay's current fee schedule for your specific category before pricing.
  • eBay Store subscriptions reduce fees. If you sell 50+ items per month, a Basic Store ($21.95/month) lowers final value fees and provides more free listings. High-volume sellers should run the numbers to see if a store subscription saves money.
  • Promoted Listings are pay-per-sale. You only pay the ad fee if the item sells through the promoted placement. Start at a low rate (2–3%) and increase if needed.
  • International sales may incur an additional international fee (currently ~1.65%). Factor this in if you sell globally.
