Etsy Fee Calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the total fees Etsy charges on a sale and your net profit after all platform costs are deducted. It accounts for listing fees, transaction fees, payment processing fees, and optional advertising fees so you can price your products accurately and understand your true margins.

Etsy is one of the most popular marketplaces for handmade, vintage, and craft supply items, with over 90 million active buyers. However, the fee structure can be confusing because costs come from multiple sources—each small individually but adding up to 15–25% of your sale price. Sellers who do not account for all fees often discover their margins are much thinner than expected.

This tool helps both new and experienced Etsy sellers set profitable prices, compare Etsy against other platforms, and forecast monthly fee expenses based on projected sales volume.

How to use it

  1. Enter the item sale price (e.g. $35.00).
  2. Enter the shipping price you charge (or $0 if free shipping—but note Etsy still takes a fee on the shipping amount the buyer pays).
  3. Indicate whether the sale came through Etsy Ads or Offsite Ads (optional).
  4. Review the itemized fee breakdown and your net revenue after all fees.

Formulas used

  • Listing fee = $0.20 per item (charged when listed and again upon each sale for auto-renewing listings).

  • Transaction fee = 6.5% × (Item price + Shipping price) Example: ($35.00 + $5.00) × 0.065 = $2.60

  • Payment processing fee = 3% + $0.25 per transaction (US sellers; varies by country) Example: $40.00 × 0.03 + $0.25 = $1.45

  • Offsite Ads fee (if applicable) = 15% of item price (12% for sellers with $10K+ annual revenue). Charged only when a sale results from an Etsy offsite ad.

  • Total fees = Listing fee + Transaction fee + Processing fee + Ads fee (if any)

  • Net revenue = Sale price + Shipping charged − Total fees

Examples

Example 1 — Simple sale, no ads: Item = $28.00, shipping = $4.50. Listing = $0.20. Transaction = $2.11. Processing = $1.23. Total fees = $3.54. Net revenue = $28.96. Effective fee rate ≈ 10.9%.

Example 2 — Free shipping (built into price): Item = $42.00, shipping = $0. Listing = $0.20. Transaction = $2.73. Processing = $1.51. Total fees = $4.44. Net revenue = $37.56. Effective fee rate ≈ 10.6%.

Example 3 — Offsite Ads sale: Item = $55.00, shipping = $0. Listing = $0.20. Transaction = $3.58. Processing = $1.90. Offsite Ads = $8.25. Total fees = $13.93. Net revenue = $41.07. Effective fee rate ≈ 25.3%.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Price to cover fees. Many new sellers set prices based on materials + time and forget to add 12–15% for Etsy fees. Build fees into your pricing from the start.
  • Free shipping is not free for you. Etsy encourages free shipping, but the transaction fee still applies to the effective shipping cost. Bake shipping into the item price and account for the fee on the full amount.
  • Offsite Ads are mandatory for most sellers. If your shop earns over $10,000/year, you cannot opt out of Offsite Ads. Factor the potential 12–15% fee into your pricing for ad-driven sales.
  • Listing fees add up. At $0.20 each, listing 200 items costs $40 before a single sale. For shops with large inventories, this is a meaningful fixed cost.
  • Compare platforms. Etsy's combined fee rate (10–25%) is competitive with Amazon Handmade and Shopify when you include payment processing and marketing costs, but direct sales on your own website may be cheaper at scale.
  • Track fees monthly. Use Etsy's payment account or a spreadsheet to reconcile actual fees against your estimates. Discrepancies often reveal forgotten costs.
